ENGINEERING: Pamela Fletcher, Executive chief engineer for electrified vehicles, General Motors

Pamela Fletcher has one of the toughest engineering assignments in the industry: She is charged with making a profitable business out of electrified vehicles.

Fletcher, 49, has deftly guided the commonization of parts, which reduces engineering costs, increases volume and boosts efficiency and quality.

The revamped 2016 Chevrolet Volt, on sale now in 11 states and getting rave reviews, shows how this is being done.

Just a dozen parts separate the Voltís powertrain from the one in the upcoming Malibu hybrid. And all electrified GM vehicles use the same lithium ion batteries.

Next up for Fletcher: launching the Chevrolet Bolt battery electric hatchback in about a year.
